What does dexa stand for?

Dexa stands for ‘Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry'. It is the most commonly used test for measuring bone mineral density. It is the best way to diagnosis osteoporosis.

This test is so accurate that your follow up dexa scan can be used to monitor treatment to learn if your treatment plan is working.

RISK FACTORS FOR OSTEOPOROSIS
  • An inactive lifestyle
  • Caucasian or Asian Descent
  • Frequent use of alcohol
  • Frequent use of carbonated beverages
  • Frequent use of caffeinated beverages
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Diet low in dairy products, calcium & vitamin D
  • Family History of osteoporosis
  • Being thin or having a small frame
  • Postmenopausal, early or surgically induced - women can lose up to 20% of their bone mass in the 5-7 years following menopause
  • Absence of menstrual periods (amenorrhea)
  • Use of corticosteroids or anticonvulsants
  • Anorexia nervosa, bulimia or other eating disorders
  • Low testosterone levels in men
  • Asian Americans and Native Americans are at a significant risk as well
